Propeller’s Winter Seasonal Returns

As winter takes hold across Nova Scotia, fans of Propeller Brewing Company are bristling with the excitement that surrounds the annual release of the brewery’s Revolution RIS. The Russian Imperial Stout will make its 2011 debut December 1st.

Propeller brews this unique ale true to its traditional roots; in the 18th century the English sent their brews via the Baltic Sea to the court of the Czars. To reduce the risk of spoilage Russian Imperial Stout was brewed to very high gravities and allowed to ferment on the long voyage. The result? A dark, strong and bracing brew.  Propeller's version weighs in at eight percent alcohol by volume and boasts a deep, opaque black color. It has tremendous body and mouth feel, with intense hop bitterness, roasted malt and dark fruit notes.

Propeller Brewing Company has brewed and bottled this robust ale each year since 2006. In addition to Province-wide availability in Nova Scotia, this year’s Revolution will find its way to British Columbia private retailers.

Propeller’s Pick…Pumpkin Ale.

Propeller Brewing Company has brewed its largest ever batch of Pumpkin Ale this week. This seasonal offering is available at the Propeller Cold Beer Store on Gottingen Street, select NSLC locations, private retailers and a few pubs or restaurants in the Halifax area.

Propeller brews this unique ale using Howard Dill’s® world famous Atlantic Giant Pumpkins® with a special selection of spices. That’s in addition to the usual ingredients: highest quality malted grain, hops, water and yeast. It takes big pumpkins to make big beer.

Pumpkin Ale will be sold in six packs at 28 NSLC locations throughout Nova Scotia. “Our fall seasonal was a tremendous success last year and this year we hope to build on that with the Launch of the six pack format at the NSLC” says Andrew Cooper (sales and Marketing at Propeller).

Return of the Big Dog - Local Brewers Collaborate

Halifax’s own Propeller Brewing Company has collaborated with Port Williams’ Sea Level Brewing for the for the second year to create a brew, ALPHA%DOG Wet Hopped Collaboration Ale, celebrating Nova Scotia’s thriving craft brewing community and Nova Scotia’s emerging hop industry.

"We're really excited about this project - two local breweries coming together and using 100% local hops to create something really unique. It's a testament to what craft brewing is all about" says John Allen President of Propeller Brewing Company.

Last year’s version of this unique brew sold out in just four days leaving hop heads thirsty for more. “We can only do this once a year and are limited in what can be produced” says Allen “the beer is dependent on a good hop harvest.” This year consumers can expect a much hoppier version as the brewers experimented with different hop varieties from Nova Scotia.

The amber coloured pale ale is brewed with 100% local Cascade and Chinook hops from Lazy Acres and Sea Level hop farms in the Annapolis Valley in Nova Scotia. These hops are harvested and shipped as “wet” un-dried hops to Propeller Brewery in Halifax where Sea Level brewer Randy Lawrence adds them to the brew kettle while their oils and resins are still at their peak.

The Propeller/Sea Level collaborative brew will be available tomorrow at both the Propeller Cold Beer Store and Sea Level Brewing Company

Kristall Weizen Returns

Propeller Brewing Company is embracing the arrival of summer heat and warm temperatures the return of the brewery’s summer seasonal Propeller Kristall Weizen, a light coloured thirst quenching wheat beer. Propeller introduced this popular summer style last year and it was well received by beer lovers and summer drink shoppers alike.

This week, the brewery releases single serve 500ml bottles of Kristall Weizen to 28 NSLC stores as well as private retailers.

“This time of year you want a lighter, quaffable drink, something you’d pour after mowing the lawn on a 30-degree day” says Bobby Zacharias, Production Manager at Propeller. “Kristall Weizen is the perfect summer drink.”

While summer beers often come with unusual, perhaps even gimmicky flavours Propeller takes a classic approach. Kristall Weizen is a “spinoff” of sorts. It is the filtered version of Propeller’s Hefeweizen. Zacharias explains “filtering this product results in an entirely different drinking experience. The banana and clove characteristics are more subtle in this filtered version.” The style is common in Europe, many producers include both Hefe (unfiltered) and Kristall (filtered) Weizens in their repertoires.

Rotating seasonal offerings are proving successful for Propeller with many NSLC stores selling out of Propeller seasonal releases as fast as they get them on the shelves. “As well as giving more people an opportunity to try brands that have until now have only been available at Gottingen St. brewery, it gives us a chance to experiment with new styles and test the market” Says Andrew Cooper , Sales and Marketing Manager at Propeller.

Propeller Brewing Company is introducing it’s popular London Style Porter in 341ml six-packs.  This highly acclaimed brew was first produced in 2002 and has been a strong brand for Nova Scotia’s largest microbrewery since that time. Six packs of Propeller London Style Porter will be released to the public on Thursday May 5, 2011 at Propeller’s Cold Beer Store and private stores shortly after that date. *650ml bottles of London Style Porter will continue to be sold at NSLC locations throughout Nova Scotia.

Local Brewers Collaborate

Propeller Brewing Company | press release

Nova Scotia’s most successful microbrewery teams up with Nova Scotia’s newest micro.

Halifax’s own Propeller Brewing Company has collaborated with Port Williams’ Sea Level Brewing for the first time to create a one-time releaScotiaebrating Nova Scotia’s thriving craft brewing community and Nova Scotia’s emerging hop industry.

The project was born in 2009 when Propeller’s President John Allen and Sea Level’s Owner/Brewer Randy Lawrence joked around over a pint Scotiacreating a collaborative one-off beer. The twScotiakled a bit over the idea but quickly shifted from a casual pint to the serious business of making this collaboration a reality. The liquid result from their session is ALPHA%DOG Wet Hopped Collaboration Ale.

"We're really excited about this project - two local breweries coming together and using 100% local hops to create something really unique. It's a testament to what the craft brewing movement is all about" says Allen “And Randy is the wet hop beer expert in Nova Scotia” Lawrence has produced wet hop beers for over a decade in the province.

This collaboration is not the first time the two have worked together: Lawrence was brewing for Propeller in the early 2000’s and helped to Scotiap Propeller Brewing Company’s award winning London Style Porter.

The copper coloured beer is brewed with 100% local Cascade and Willamette hops from Lazy Acres and Sea Level hop farms in the Annapolis Valley in Nova Scotia. These hops are harvested and shipped as “wet” un-dried hops to Propeller Brewery in Halifax where Sea Level brewer Randy Lawrence adds them to the brew kettle while their oils and resins are still at their peak.

Scotiaropeller/Sea Level collaborative brew will be available late this summer at both the Propeller Cold Beer Store and Sea Level Brewing Company and select private liquor stores in Halifax.

Propeller Brewing Company Launches New Brand

Propeller Brewing Company | press release

Nova Scotia’s most successful microbrewery is set to release a new seasonal brand to NSLC.

Propeller Brewing Company is embracing and capitalizing on summer heat with the brewery’s second seasonal release at the Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation (NSLC) Propeller Kristall Weizen. Propeller introduced the very popular Bohemian Style Pilsener to a wider market earlier this year.

The brewery is set to release 500ml bottles of Kristall Weizen to 28 NSLC stores this week. This summer seasonal is a filtered Weissbier. Don Harms (brewmaster at Propeller) explains “The banana and phenolic (clove) characteristics are more subtle in this filtered version, than in its unfiltered counterpart Propeller Hefeweizen.”  The style is common in Europe, many producers include both Hefe (unfiltered) and Kristall (filtered) Weizens in their repertoires.

The rotating seasonal listing is already proving successful for Propeller with many NSLC stores selling out of Pilsener as fast as they get it on the shelves. “As well as giving more people an opportunity to try brands that have until now have only been available at the Gottingen St. brewery, it gives us a chance to experiment with new styles and test the market” Says Andrew Cooper , Sales and Marketing Manager at Propeller. “We’re really exited about this.” Consumers can expect a new seasonal product from Nova Scotia’s original microbrewery about every three months. Some of these will be old favorites like Pumpkin Ale, others will be entirely new styles that Nova Scotians have not seen in our market before.

Propeller Brewing Company Expands

Propeller Brewing Company | press release

Nova Scotia’s most successful microbrewery is adding capacity in anticipation of new brew.

Propeller Brewing Company is expanding its capacity with the purchase of a new 6000 liter fermenter thanks in part to the exceptional demand for Hefeweizen, Propeller’s seasonal wheat beer first produced last summer.

The brewery is set to release six-packs of Hefeweizen to the Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation (NSLC) on May 1. This product was originally a limited, seasonal release last summer: demand proved so high production continued throughout winter months.

“Customer response has been very positive at our retail store, as well as the private liquor stores in Halifax, so we’re expecting big things from this beer at the NSLC,” says Andrew Cooper, Sales and Marketing Manager at Nova Scotia’s original microbrewery. “It is an unusual beer style for North America and we are delighted people like its unique, refreshing taste.

The new fermenter, and a new keg washing system are expected to arrive this week. Not a moment too soon. Unexpected growth in its beer sales over the usually slower winter months is putting pressure on Propeller Brewing Co to ramp up production early for summer.

Cooper says, “We’ve seen high demand already at our cold beer store, where weekend sales hit a record high. He added that while the unseasonably warm weather played its part in record sales, Propeller’s growth has never slowed. Over the past three years the brewery has added 6 fermenters totaling 27000 liters of production capacity, (every three weeks) as well as upgraded packaging equipment.

“We budgeted for a 4 per cent increase this year,” says John Allen, President of Propeller. “Instead we are running at 20 per cent. After 13 years in operation I expected our growth to settle, but that hasn’t happened.” Allen attributes Propeller’s sustained upward trend to three principles the company holds strongly. “We focus on excellence in every beer,” says Allen, “We listen carefully to our customers who know exactly what good beer is, and we run our finances with the same prudence you would your household finances. I think that’s a good formula that’s common among successful Canadian small businesses.”

Propeller spins off in mild, refreshing new direction

By SEAN WOOD Wood On Wine

PROPELLER, the now well-established Halifax craft brewery, has gradually added interesting new brews to its range. The beers are all made to exacting standards and some have been world-class standouts. Propeller's founder, John Allen, was originally inspired to make top-quality English-style beers but has recently begun to diversify. The latest is a German-style Hefeweizen. "Hefe" means yeast, "weizen" means wheat. READ on?

Propeller's new wheat beer, Hefeweizen, available on tap in their store Monday. Bottled beer to follow shortly. Note: It's good.

Don Harms, brewmaster for Propeller, pours bottles of Propeller's new wheat beer, Hefeweizen*, into glasses. He places them on the bar. Daniel Girard, Garrison Brewer, puts his nose right up to the sudsy glass and takes a huff. Banana and cloves, that's good. Lorne Romano, Rogue's Roost brewer, takes his glass over to a window and holds it up to the light.

Then they drink. Pleasure drifts across their faces in long draughts. It's good. Read More

House beers

Local brewies often prepare one-off blends of beers for bars and restaurants around town. They are worth searching out.

by Andy Murdoch

For the diehard beer hunter always looking for a new taste, there is a decent selection of blended house beers poured out in bars and restaurants across the city.

Propeller currently has the most specialty blends on tap in and out of the city.
